Male and Female Incontinence with NJCUC

Incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine when not appropriate. It occurs primarily in two settings: Stress Incontinence (SUI) and Urgency Incontinence (UI).
Although it a similar problem in terms of designation (SUI or UI), the causes for men and women are usually completely different.

Female Incontinence

Stress Incontinence is most often associated with women who have previously given birth. It occurs when the bladder is fairly full and a pressure, such as a cough or sneeze, catches them unaware.
Urgency Incontinence is associated with problems that arise from the inability to delay the urge to void when the “signal” occurs. The “Gotta Go NOW!” feeling.
Both varieties lead to the involuntary loss of urine resulting in becoming “wet”.
Your urologist will determine which variety plagues you using a series of easy in-office evaluations. He will then provide you with a rapid, effective treatment.

SUI is usually corrected with an outpatient surgical procedure, while UI is most often treated with medication.
Male Incontinence

Most forms of Stress Incontinence in men are due to a history of previous prostate surgery and are treated primarily with surgery.

Urgency Incontinence is either the result of a prostate problem or a neurological problem that can be readily determined by your urologist.
Depending on the cause it can easily be treated in most cases.
